To get an idea of the speed of light talk about how long it takes light to travel certain distances: eight times round the world in a second; 3 seconds to the moon and back; 8 minutes to the sun; 3 hours to Jupiter; 4% years to our (second) nearest star. This also helps to give an idea of the scale of the cosmos. Compare this with sound, which travels just faster than commercial jet planes, taking 3 seconds to travel a kilometre and an hour from tip to toe of the UK. Every 3 seconds you count between lightning and thunder puts only a kilometre between you and the storm!
