Today, large amounts of hydrogen are used for the production of ammonia. With adoption of the Fusion-Hydrogen energy system, its hydrogen will be used for ammonia production. Ammonia is essential as a source of nitrogen for use as fertilizer. Much of the world's recent ability to increase food production comes because of the development of the Haber process for the production of ammonia. 198 To make ammonia, hydrogen and nitrogen are reacted at high temperature and pressure in the presence of a catalyst. Currently the hydrogen to make ammonia is produced by the partial combustion of fossil fuels in the presence of water vapor. The nitrogen is extracted from the air. The over-all products of the reaction used to make ammonia are ammonia and carbon dioxide. With the introduction of the Fusion-Hydrogen energy system, the hydrogen will be available for the production of ammonia without the use of the fossil fuel and the attendant production of carbon dioxide.
