We are living in a material world. Life itself depends on fundamentally material processes. But our human lives are not, and have never been, solely and exclusively material concerns. This realisation has informed every religious doctrine in human history. But you do not need to be an advocate of any particular religion or creed to acknowledge it. All you need is an understanding of human behaviour which goes beyond the simplistic doctrine on which the industrial economy has built its own particular temple. It is now time to turn a critical attention on that underlying doctrine. First, though, let me briefly summarise where the investigation in this book now stands.
