It has been shown that the tissues of most zooplankton contain little carbohydrate. The carbohydrate content of material filtered from seawater derives almost entirely from the plants present. Measurements of carbohydrate therefore provide a means of estimating the amount of plant material in a sample (Marshall and Orr, 1962). Carbohydrate can be determined absorptiometrically from measurements of the intensity of brown colouration developed by the action of phenol and concentrated sulphuric acid, or with anthrone.
