When you install a heating system on your swimming pool, simply put, you can use your pool three or four times more than without a heater. The water will be much more comfortable, and you'll be able to swim over a longer season.

Master Plan The master plan for a college or university articulates a vision and goals and creates an opportunity for the institution to express its vision through the future development of its physical facilities as well as its interaction with its host community and the environment. As part of the master plan, institutions have the opportunity to set goals related to sustainability. These goals can be expressed as commitments to energy efficiency, use of renewable energy, healthy, local, or green materials in new buildings and major renovations, commitment to public transportation, and a host of other factors that, particularly over the long run, have a significant influence on the campus emission profile. Delaware has set goals to lower its greenhouse gas emissions 30 below BAU by 2019, and has approved the formation of a 'sustainable energy utility' (SEU) to undertake energy policies supportive of climate protection (Delaware SEU (Sustainable Energy Utility) Task Force, 2007). The initiative is funded by a Sustainable Energy Bond and a charge on electricity sales which, together, will transform energy capital investment from its supply bias to a demand-side focus.
By establishing performance goals early and planning carefully, the project team succeeded in reducing the project's carbon footprint, often through strategies that addressed other priorities, too. For example, two other project goals were to preserve open space by reducing the amount of land used for buildings, and to reduce the amount of impermeable surfaces on the land. An elegant solution addressed all three of these green priorities. Since Missoula County does not permit the use of pervious materials for parking surfaces, the team included an underground parking garage in the program. The decision to move a portion of the parking underground preserved the open space needed for the community gardens and orchard. Looking at various LEED-certified projects, we often see very different results in terms of certified wood use. The lesson for marketers of certified wood products is to know an architect's and owner's project goals intimately and be prepared to argue that the public relations benefit is worth the extra money that would be spent on certified lumber for rough carpentry or finish items. In many cases, the cost premium for dimensional lumber is not significant however, its use is probably not enough to meet the requirement for certified wood to represent 50 percent of the value of total wood products. In this case, add some combination of dimensional lumber and cabinetry, and the total cost for buying this lumber as certified will be enough to meet the 50 percent test of total value for all wood-based materials.
Focusing on the social economy, the UK strategy specifically highlights community engagement in governance as a key element of a sustainable society (HM Government, 2005 Seyfang, 2006b), and looks to community and voluntary groups to lead the way and generate the innovations in governance, behaviour and lifestyle changes - embedded and 'owned' in local communities - necessary for sustainable consumption and production (DEFRA, 2005b Rogers and Robinson, 2004). In addition, DEFRA is developing its own strategy to support social enterprise because of the ways the sector combines social, economic and increasingly environmental objectives, and contributes directly to its strategic goals of achieving sustainable rural communities, waste reduction, biodiversity enhancement, action on climate change, and so on (DEFRA, 2005a). IMAGINE TRYING TO BUILD A social movement without communication neither spoken word nor written text, nor pictures worth a thousand words, nor even body language. No leaflets, no e-mails, no campaign ads, no slogans, no clever symbols or taglines, no op-eds in the newspapers, no books or articles in magazines, no TV spots, no megaphones, no nothing. It would be impossible. Successful movements require effective means of communication and, just as important, effective manners of communication. How we speak about an issue, about solutions, and about our goals makes all the difference for building an effective campaign and movement.

A geopolitical model has several purposes. It lets us order events and make general statements about reality. We can use the model to help us understand causal relationships between events and communities. The communities can range in size from organizations to alliances of nations. The geopolitical model lets us anticipate future developments and, in some instances, make predictions. It helps us establish the importance of information in relation to the model and it shows us paths that might help us reach our goals.
Under EO 12873, agencies were required to report their compliance annually to the Federal Environmental Executive and through that office to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). To speed the adoption of affirmative procurement programs, EPA was instructed to produce guidance on designated items that are or can be made with recovered materials and what constitutes an environmentally preferable product. Agencies were also required to set goals for waste reduction and procurement of recycled and environmentally preferable products. EO 12873 specified that all future contractors must comply with the order and that current contracts should be modified to allow compliance where feasible 11 .
For Freeden ideology11 is a distinct thought practice, one which is central to politics because it provides a language of meaning and a set of conventions that shape political discourse and 'enable us to choose to become what we want to become' (1996 553). Yet, while it provides the tools which make a certain kind of political action possible, it does not resolve the questions of how best to achieve goals. Thus while strategic choices are ideological questions, ideology does not provide the solution to strategic dilemmas. Implicit in this model is a view of ideology as a condition of collective action - one that creates a 'we'. Ideology is therefore related to identity, but not wholly equivalent. It was clearly noted during the interview that all the companies have serious internal discussions of corporate values. It is a common practice for these companies to define and write down the values that they would like to be identified with. Although some are expressed specifically or broadly, these values have a strong meaning for companies' managers and employees, thus, affecting the companies' goal-setting and decision-making processes.
At this stage, it is often useful to take a step back and see where we are and whether earlier project goals need to be reexamined. We might also take a meeting or two to look at new opportunities that might have surfaced through the analytical efforts of the early design stages. 2 What are our goals for using life-cycle costing and life-cycle assessment methods for materials selection, and how can we use these and similar tools to help us decide on major building systems at this stage
The most successful process we've employed to help people to change is this at the first goal-setting charrette, we map out a design process that shows how people are going to be integrating and communicating, when they're going to be talking and why. How good could public transport be Perhaps we can get a rough indication by looking at the data from Japan in table 20.8. At 19 kWh per 100p-km and 6 kWh per 100p-km, bus and rail both look promising. Rail has the nice advantage that it can solve both of our goals - reduction in energy consumption, and independence from fossil fuels. Buses and coaches have obvious advantages of simplicity and flexibility, but keeping this flexibility at the same time as getting buses and coaches to work without fossil fuels may be a challenge.
The study's authors commented, From this analysis we conclude that many projects achieve sustainable design within their initial budget, or with very small supplemental funding. This suggests that owners are finding ways to incorporate project goals and values, regardless of budget, by making choices. However, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. The project uses evaporative chillers but we could have gone even further with energy recovery enthalpy wheels as did the Ohlone College project that capture the heat or cool energy in the exhaust air from the building for energy and use it to pre-treat the air coming into the building. We did a quick calculation to determine how much efficiency we would get out of it. Was it going to get us from seven to nine LEED energy points We calculated that it would get us close to eight maybe, and that it would cost another 60,000 to get to nine points. We quickly decided that we had done enough to achieve our goals.

One of our goals in developing the personal action initiatives on campus is that all members of the university community will carry the lessons with them into other communities. For faculty and staff, we hope that learning about compact fluorescent bulbs and shutting down their computers at work will lead to greater learning and action that will in turn influence the decisions they make at home, as members of town government, through their activities in social service organizations, and in other aspects of their lives outside of work. For students, we hope these lessons will stay with them long after they graduate, and will permeate their professional practice and their home lives, including purchasing decisions and travel choices.

Perhaps one of the most important phases of university planning is the goal setting that sets the stage for detailed plans. These goals are critical for comprehensive action on climate change. Goals for addressing climate change have been embraced by governments, industry, and individuals (see chapter 2). For example, countries that have ratified the Kyoto Protocol and states and provinces that have endorsed the New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers climate action statements also set goals for climate change. In Burlington, Vermont, and in an increasing number of towns, cities, and campuses, individuals are signing up for the 10 Challenge, a pledge to reduce individual emissions by 10 percent.3
Proach to building a sustainable society is to keep positive visions of the future in focus, and to work diligently on making them happen. A psychologically sophisticated approach to environmental problems must include ways of protecting us from overload and despair. Hope is a crucial psychological commodity for building a sustainable future, as it is for emotional intelligence in general (Goleman, 1995 Seligman, 1975 Snyder et al., 1991). The importance of providing positive images flows directly from Freudian psychology that emphasizes defenses and anxiety. With positive images of our future, we can direct more of our energy toward accomplishing our goals, and use less of it defending against negative feelings.
Realizing that traditional strategy analysis often does not lead very far in terms of actual change, change programs today are often organized so that the same core team of persons will be able to participate in a project from start to finish, so that some of the participants in the analysis phase also become the leaders in the change project or program. Locations, budgets, and sometimes actual design decisions. Trustees, overseers, and high-level administrators have varying degrees of input into decisions about buildings, but they set the tone and direction for planning, fundraising, and often aesthetics. Their institution's legacy, long-term plans, and academic and financial health are their concerns. Administrators and trustees play a critical role in goal setting, planning, and project budget decisions that have long-lasting consequences for buildings, energy systems, and climate change action. In addition, trustees can leverage other leadership roles in business, government, education, and other not-for-profits such as hospitals, cultural institutions, and faith-based organizations to influence climate change action on a larger regional scale.
Taking this kind of dichotomies as the starting point there is the risk that the WFD furthers the traditional interest oriented approach where environmental protection interests and socio-economic interests are set against each other and planning is understood as trading between them. The literature on the WFD gives a very controversial picture of the degrees of freedom left for the regional and local levels to define the protection goals. Naturally it is also a question of definition whether the local application of ecological standards is seen to include elements of goal setting or whether it is seen merely as implementation of goals set from above.
Analysts now have the opportunity to examine the various corporate responses to climate risk in order to identify leading companies. Even though companies in different sectors have dissimilar levels of exposure to climate risk, a proactive response to this issue serves as a good proxy for overall quality of management for energy and retail companies alike. Companies that develop a strong management response to climate change, track Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, set goals for reduction, and actively communicate their progress to investors and the general public, to name just a few examples, have an opportunity to distinguish themselves from their peers and attract investment.
