Practical Strategies for Managing the Interface

The most important point for practitioners to take away from the previous discussion is that social interactions are of critical significance when addressing problems affecting complex social-ecological systems. In these complex decision situations, integrating sound science into the decision-making process—managing the science-policy interface—in essence consists of organizing and managing a set of social interactions, and thus is an exercise in institutional design. In this section, I discuss some practical strategies for getting from here to there. The section is organized around three basic recommendations: broaden involvement in question-framing; put greater emphasis on qualitative, conceptual models, particularly during the early phases of the decision process; and use boundary organizations, neutral third-parties, as science facilitators and integrators.
