Acid Deposition

Acid deposition is composed primarily of sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides, volatile organic compounds, and ozone. Acid deposition begins with emissions of these chemicals primarily from industrial plants and automobile exhaust. The chemicals then interact with water vapor and sunlight in the upper atmosphere to form acidic compounds. These acidic substances then fall to the earth in the form of rain, snow, sleet, fog, dew, and even as dry particulate matter and gas. The impact of acid deposition over the long term can be devastating. Scientific studies have linked transborder acid deposition with declining forest productivity and the acidification of tens of thousands lakes and rivers (which has resulted in the decline of fish stocks and can affect the reproductive capabilities of both fish and amphibians), deterioration of historical buildings and monuments, as well as numerous human health problems [6].
