Pulse neutron monitoring on the River Meuse at Eijsden

A field trial in the River Meuse was carried out over a time period of 3 weeks with data sampling each hour (Fig. 9). The probe was lowered to the river bottom and Fig. 9 shows the general situation for both channels over the whole monitoring period. The average lines for the neutron intensity distribution in both channels are very similar and in view of their different depth of investigation, it may be concluded that the situation in the bottom sediments and in the water is comparable. In the background of Fig. 9 are presented the recorded countrates. The deviation of primary data from the trend line indicates a rapidly changing environment, caused by the transported material, which is of a different kind to that shown in Fig. 4. There are various compounds in small quantities of either organic or inorganic nature detected, but the dominatant role is played by Cd.

Using chemical analysis from samples on April 19th and 20th as reference the position of the decay curve was calibrated in Cd-values and a maximum of Cd-concentration extrapolated, which was calculated for an event on April 26, where Cd was transported by the river water in higher quantities (Fig. 10). Organic compounds appeared periodically. The most remarkable anomalies for organic presence (suspected pesticides) were measured in the evening of April 20th, in the morning of April 22nd and on April 28th.
