Interpret the Graph

How do sediments move in a stream? The critical velocity of water determines the size of particles that can be moved. The higher the stream velocity, the larger the particles that can be transported.

Think Critically

1. Identify at what velocity flowing water would pick up a pebble.

2. Identify at what range of velocities flowing water would carry a pebble.

3. Infer which object would not fall into the same size range as a pebble: an egg, a baseball, a golf ball, a table tennis ball, a volleyball, and a pea. How would you test your conclusions?
