Almost one-third of the projects utilize the direct-use method. This option directly uses LFG to offset the use of another fuel, such as natural gas, coal, or fuel oil. The fuel can be used in a boiler, kiln, greenhouse, dryer, or other thermal applications. Currently, it is being used for applications such as firing pottery and glass-blowing kilns, powering and heating ice rinks and greenhouses, and heating water for aquaculture (fish farming) operations. Current industries using LFG include chemical production, auto manufacturing, food processing, cement and brick manufacturing, the pharmaceutical industry, and prisons and hospitals.
