The initial case is notified by e-mail to www.who.int/csr/alertresponse and subsequent summaries of the number of cases suspected and confirmed are sent at weekly intervals.

The regulations are being revised and instead of the current list of three diseases, this will be replaced by a requirement for all countries 'to notify WHO of all diseases or events of international public health importance'. This will mean that such events, as the first cases of a new infection, such as SARS, must be reported.
