Operational factors

In planning vaccination programmes, cultural, logistic and other operational factors largely determine the coverage. Some of these are:

1. The strongest motivation to attend MCH clinics is immediately after the child has been born; the shorter the interval between birth and vaccination, the more likely they are to be brought by their mothers.

2. A range of ages, days and combinations should be available so that the time of attendance is always the right time for vaccination. If a mother is told to bring her child back at a set time or at a particular age of the child, then she probably will not bother.

3. Admission to hospital is an ideal opportunity to check whether the vaccination schedule is up to date. Measles vaccination is particularly important as many children contract serious measles when admitted to hospital for another complaint.
