Period of communicability of all the arbo-virus infections is as long as there are still infected mosquitoes remaining.
Susceptibility is general, but infection leads to immunity, probably life-long. In endemic areas, they are diseases of children, otherwise they are epidemic, affecting all age groups and both sexes. In 2002, there were epidemics of West Nile virus in Israel,
Canada and the USA (resulting in 3231 cases and 176 deaths in the USA), countries where this infection had not occurred before. While most people suffered minor illness, individuals with weakened immune systems, such as people with chronic diseases, those on chemotherapy or the elderly suffered more serious effects, including meningitis and encephalitis.
