Diseases of Water Contact

Water is an important medium for the transmission of disease processes. Normally it is through drinking water, which has become polluted by faecal material, that infection is transmitted, or through water used to wash food and the food subsequently consumed. It also serves as a medium for fish or other organisms to live, which may carry a parasitic stage that is transmitted when they are eaten (as covered in Chapters 8 and 9). In this chapter, we look at one important disease and one almost eradicated that are transmitted by contact with water, in which the intermediate stages are free living. Minimizing water contact is, therefore, the best method of control if it can be applied.
