In the consolidation phase, the full apparatus of disease reduction is disbanded and reliance placed on small specialist teams that can rapidly respond to the active surveillance system. If a focus of malaria is found, then focal spraying and radical treatment of cases is implemented. If a yaws or polio case is suspected, then mass treatment or vaccination is given in the surrounding area. The essence of the consolidation phase is speed and efficiency. If rapid remedial action cannot be carried out, then the disease is liable to return.
