Exergy Supply Trends For The Us And Japan

In the remainder of this book we compare the US and Japan in considerable detail. The choice of Japan for this purpose is partly due to the availability of excellent historical data for the full hundred-year period. However, Japan also offers a fascinating contrast with the US. While the two countries are at comparable levels of development today, the history of development has been very different. Moreover, the two countries differ radically in terms of raw material base. The patterns of exergy supply and use differ substantially between the two countries, so if our theory of growth works well for both countries, it will increase our confidence in the new theory.

Inputs of exergy by source for the two countries are shown side by side in Figure 3.7a and Figure 3.7b. Note that exergy inputs from minerals and biomass are included explicitly. Breakdowns of the supply data in
