Solar shading

In considering climate facades solar shading featured as an integral element in the triple glazing. More common are external shading devices which are confined to the southerly elevation. These are featured in Portcullis House. More recently the Wessex Water building features some of the most complex solar shading devices yet encountered (Figure 14.5).

The Millennium Galleries opened in Sheffield in 2001 have some of the most elaborate solar shading which can be rotated through 90° to achieve levels of solar exclusion up to total internal blackout (Figure 14.6).

Renewable Energy 101

Renewable Energy 101

Renewable energy is energy that is generated from sunlight, rain, tides, geothermal heat and wind. These sources are naturally and constantly replenished, which is why they are deemed as renewable. The usage of renewable energy sources is very important when considering the sustainability of the existing energy usage of the world. While there is currently an abundance of non-renewable energy sources, such as nuclear fuels, these energy sources are depleting. In addition to being a non-renewable supply, the non-renewable energy sources release emissions into the air, which has an adverse effect on the environment.
