Recycling strategy checklist

• First a client should be encouraged to sanction the use of recycled materials. This is an important precondition of a project. Reference to best practice case studies is useful in this respect.

• Design practices need to adapt to accommodate the recycling culture. At the same time designers should maximise the opportunities for materials to be recycled after demolition. Buildings which can be dismantled rather than demolished are much better in this respect.

• In determining costs, considerations about embodied energy and resource depletion should be factored in. At the same time there should be considerable overall savings as against new materials which should have an impact on the whole life cost assessment.

• Contractors should be persuaded to be co-operative about the use of recycled materials and willing to accept a degree of liability on behalf of subcontractors. In the case of the Conference Centre, Earth Centre, the main contractor was an enthusiastic advocate of the strategy.

• All site waste should be sorted and recycled where possible. This can save the costs of transport and landfill fees.

• On the supply site, retailers of recycled materials should provide a measure of quality assurance if not a full guarantee.

All these items should contribute to a favourable life-cycle assessment score.

Renewable Energy 101

Renewable Energy 101

Renewable energy is energy that is generated from sunlight, rain, tides, geothermal heat and wind. These sources are naturally and constantly replenished, which is why they are deemed as renewable. The usage of renewable energy sources is very important when considering the sustainability of the existing energy usage of the world. While there is currently an abundance of non-renewable energy sources, such as nuclear fuels, these energy sources are depleting. In addition to being a non-renewable supply, the non-renewable energy sources release emissions into the air, which has an adverse effect on the environment.
