The objective of this study is to formulate and to test simple, physically based, probabilistic models of vegetation-climate relationships for the assessment of the likelihood of changes in regional vegeta-

tion composition under several different scenarios of climate change. Nonparametric density estimation approach can serve as an exploratory tool for the analysis of highly nonlinear interactions between vegetation, soil, and climate. It allows one to produce and compare estimates of vegetation prevalence with different ensembles of independent variables and vegetation classification.
